Software May Help You Avoid Red Light Tickets

Tech Savvy Drivers Use Phone Apps To Avoid Tickets

DENVER — If you’re not careful, the cameras will get you.

Red light cameras at four of the city’s intersections have caught thousands of drivers breaking the law each month. In September alone, the city of Denver’s traffic cameras busted 1,150 people running the red light at East Sixth Avenue and Lincoln Street.

David Greenberg said he was a cautious driver but even he gets distracted. He said he relies on PhantomAlert software to help him stay alert.

For $100, users can download the product to their GPS device or iPhone. The software alerts drivers to red light cameras, school zones, railroad crossings, DUI checkpoints, and dangerous intersections. “It kind of wakes you up and makes you a little more aware of your surroundings and speeds,” said Greenberg. Car Toys said there are other products besides PhantomAlert that will also help you on the roads. “There is the Whistler, for red light camera detection, and the Escort,” said Jeremy Linehan, Car Toys. Despite the economy, the Car Toys manager said sales of these products haven’t slowed down. “I am selling on average one or two of the 9500 CI Escorts a month and I am selling on average 20-30 of the cheaper 9500 ix Escorts a month,” said Linehan. Police said they have no problem with the products either. “Anything that makes you slow down and think about what you’re doing while you’re on the road — we have no problem with that,” said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.
